ORPHANS OF THE CANCER STORM
Cancer cells multiply rapidly, and are therefore more susceptible to chemotherapy, as the drugs work by damaging the cells' ability to grow or reproduce themselves.  However, various types of rapidly dividing healthy cells can also be damaged by chemotherapy drugs, causing side effects.  These include cells found in bone marrow, hair follicles, the mouth, stomach, intestines, and skin. Fortunately, normal cells recover quickly so side effects of treatment are usually temporary.

Although reading about the side effects of cancer therapy may be overwhelming, it is important to remember that awareness of the potential problems will play an essential part in your own preventative measures, recognition of symptoms and early detection of problems.  Prompt action can help increase your child’s comfort levels and minimise the side effects.

Side effects may rarely be lifethreatening and some may continue throughout life.  However, though most side effects are unpleasant, the majority are not serious, and will settle when the associated treatment ends.

Remember that your child is unique.  Each child will tollerate treatment differently, and many experience minimal problems, if any.  If you have any concerns arising from the information provided in this section, discuss them as soon as possible with your child's doctors.
