| ORPHANS OF THE CANCER STORM |
| When Jesse Farquarson was diagnosed with advanced retinoblastoma, music was the only thing that could calm him down during treatments and the long recovery that followed his bone marrow transplant in 2001. Music and dance have long been recognised for their therapeutic capabilities, and the power to express deep feelings and emotions when other forms of communication do not work so well or are not possible. For young children who have not yet developed sufficient language skills, communication can be difficult, especially when that child is unwell or limited further by sensory impairment and/or other disabilities. So exactly one year after his diagnosis, Jesse's family established a foundation in his honour, that would work towards providing life-enriching music and dance therapy opportunities for other children like Jesse, and their brothers and sisters. The Jesse Foundation supports many varied projects, both in and outside the hospital setting. From music therapy programs that enhance palliative care through Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, to imaginative use of music that enriches the multi-sensory experience of the natural environment, the foundation works actively and creatively to bring comfort and opportunity for expression to seriously ill youngsters across Ontario and beyond. In addition to Jesse Foundation projects, grant-making activities give many individual children the chance to participate in extra-curricular music and dance activities. This is an inspiring tribute to the courage and survivorship of a very special little boy. Featured website address: orphancancer.org Location: General/ResourceLinks/emotionalsupport |
